Using CBD oil for pain relief ( + it’s other healing benefits)

I have been using cbd myself for nearly a year now. CBD oil has been pretty big in the news lately and it has become a bit of a ‘thing’ in health & wellness too. While it may be a trend for some, cbd oil is something I have found to help greatly with many of the symptoms of my chronic illness. Most notably muscle and joint pain.

I suffer from M.E and Fibromyalgia.

In this post I’m going to cover my own experience with cbd, how to start taking it, and all of the health benefits of cbd oil.

What is CBD oil?

CBD is an oil made from the cannabis sativa plant, or hemp.

Don’t let this put you off, initially I was wary too. But cbd contains none of the thc chemical that causes a ‘high’ as you would find in medical marijuana. There is plenty of information out there, do your research and it will put your mind at ease.

Plants that produce cbd are a non-drug variety, made from the flowers and leaves of the plant (not to be confused with hemp oil which is made from the seeds).

The non-drug strains of cannabis are grown to produce naturally high levels of cannabinol (cbd) and minimal levels of thc. They are 100% safe and non-addictive.

Cannabinol is oil soluble, this means it can be mixed with a carrier oil such as coconut or hemp seed oil to give optimum absorption into the body, so you will feel the effects faster.

If you are managing any form of chronic pain in your day-to-day life I wholeheartedly recommend that you give cbd oil a try.

CBD is a natural relaxant, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Specifically, cbd has an anti-inflammatory effect on the joints. Helping to reduce stiffness, pain, and associated swelling that comes with painful joints.

CBD extracts also have pain relieving effects because of how they interact with certain parts of your brain, specifically the EC system which communicates massages between neurones. Because CBD is a plant extract, like essential oils, it is one of the few substances that can pass through the cell membrane, and across the bodies natural barrier into the brain.

In addition it is also an antioxidant. Meaning it has the added benefit of helping your body to remove toxins and cleanse your blood. By helping your body achieve this CBD therefore has the added effect of improving your general feeling of health & wellbeing. Many causes of inflammation can lie in an accumulation of waste and toxins throughout the body.

How to use CBD oil

My experience with starting to use CBD daily is that it’s better to start ‘low and slow’ with small dosage and build up.

Starting using CBD oil actually made me feel worse to start with. As CBD comes in oil form it is fast acting, however your body can take a while to get used to it. Personally I found it was about three weeks before I started to feel the full benefits, but as I’ve mentioned many times before, everybody is different, and every body is different in the way that it metabolises and reacts to different substances.

For the first few weeks I actually felt worse – I was sluggish, had headaches and often felt sick. Because this is a natural reaction of your body as it eliminates toxins it will fade, so stick with it!

After the first three weeks I saw a significant improvement in my general well-being, and a reduction in the pain I usually suffer from.

Once you are happy with a small dose of CBT, you can start to increase your dosage. I started out using an oil in bottle form with a dropper. You put 3 to 10 drops onto your tongue. Once I was happy with 3 drops twice a day, I increased to 6 drops twice a day, & then eventually onto a much higher dosage in capsule form (which, full disclosure tastes a lot better and it’s easier to take them that oil straight onto your tongue!).

Starting small also allows you to work out what dosage you need to see the best effects. For example- If you can take six drops twice a day, and that is enough to manage your pain, then maybe you don’t need to go to a higher dosage.

Listen to your body and only do what you are comfortable with.

As well as being a great aid for joint pain relief, being anti-inflammatory, and full of antioxidants, CBD oil has many other benefits for health & healing that you can use too.

1. Chronic back pain

As well as muscle and joint pain CBD has been shown to help with lower back pain. Because it is an anti-inflammatory it works in reducing inflammation throughout the body, and has the added effects of dampening your perception of pain.

Many health problems come with inflammation. CBD can help with a lot of them, such as Alzheimer’s, arthritis, diabetes, and the pain associated with nerve damage.

2. Sleep

CBD promotes refreshing REM sleep, something that can be hard if you are suffering from M.E and/or fibromyalgia…

This is the stage of deep sleep that your body needs to heal, and for you to wake up feeling refreshed. Your internal body clocks and your quality of sleep have a huge impact on your health and energy levels.

3. Anxiety & Panic attacks

CBD oil has relaxing and calming effects. It helps to reduce muscle tension, restlessness and fatigue as well as the feelings of panic and anxiety that can come with daily life, and social situations.

4. Mood

An added benefit of CBD is that it can help lift your mood. As well as being relaxing CBD has properties that help balance your mood from the inside, because it regulates your central nervous system.

5. Period pain

The muscle relaxant and calming effects of CBD mean that it is a good remedy for helping to relieve the cramping and muscle pains that are period pains.

CBD will also help you with other pms symptoms like irritability.

6. Other conditions

Research has shown that CBD can help with other chronic and serious health problems such as M.S, tremors, psoriasis, and nerve damage. As well as epilepsy.
