In my last post I talked about living more in tune with the seasons (if you haven’t yet you can read it here). As part of this I feel that eating seasonally or eating for the seasons goes hand in hand with listening to your body and working with nature.
What is eating seasonally?
What does eating seasonally mean? Eating seasonally is choosing fruits and vegetables that are naturally growing at certain times of year. Just because something is being sold at your local supermarket does not mean that it would naturally be growing at that time of year.
We are living in a time of convenience and consumerism where everything we could possibly want or need is on hand to us at the press of a button, or the following of a whim. This is not necessarily good for our bodies or our planet!
Certain fruits and vegetables flourish naturally in the climate of each season. Rather than choosing fruits and vegetables that have been grown artificially or shipped from other countries you can choose to fully embrace each season by eating what is naturally growing in abundance (and organically) at this time.
I have been eating this way as much as possible for the past year now, and not only do I feel it’s beneficial for my body, I have come to fully appreciate the fruits and vegetables I can find in each season and look forward to being able to eat them again the next time. It definitely makes you appreciate the food you are eating 100 times more!
Why is eating seasonally important?
It aligns our body with nature
Eating food that are naturally flourishing in a season will give your body what it needs at that time, and help you naturally be in sync and make the most of each season.
Choosing to buy produce that is in season in your own country is better and less harmful to the planet. Instead of having to travel hundreds or possibly thousands of miles to reach your supermarket shelves, fruits and vegetables that are in season are local and right on your doorstep. You can even grow them yourself or go foraging in the hedgerows to find lots of juicy berries and bulbs.
Because these fruits and vegetables are in abundance and grow locally they will also be cheaper for you to buy too. This is often a good tip to use if you are in a supermarket and unsure of what to buy. If the fruits and vegetables are cheap that is often a good indicator that they are in season.
Not only is this better for your pocket, but it also means that you will be buying local produce, and supporting the local farmers and economy.
It’s healthier for your body
Nature is very clever. By eating fruits and vegetables that are in season you are naturally consuming and absorbing the vitamins and minerals and the types of foods that you need at that time of year.
For example eating more root vegetables during winter when your body needs more carbs and fibre filled foods to stay warm.
Eating more mushrooms which are in season during the winter months and full of vitamin D that our bodies need while there is less sunlight.
Eating citrus fruits such as oranges, which are full of vitamin C to boost your immune system and keep winter colds and sickness away.
