Anyone who has tried Green tea will tell you it’s an acquired taste, but one that you can grow to love… and I can attest to that personally! I can also tell you that Green teas many benefits are worth its slight bitter taste. There are many different brands of green tea, so if it is something you struggle to enjoy I would suggest maybe experimenting with different varieties to start until you find one that suits you. Try going for one that is described as ‘light’, as these tend to have a less strong green taste!

I drink Green tea every day, at least two cups, as part of my morning routine. Maybe more if I feel like it throughout the day, and I have definitely noticed a difference in how I feel generally, and how it helps set me up for the rest of the day.

Green tea is better for you than caffeine, and offers a more sustained raise in energy levels than coffee of tea. Not only that but it has huge antioxidant powers, and other plant benefits:

Because green tea is a plant it’s full of lots of good nutrition, chlorophyll, and many antioxidants which can help with all sorts of ailments and assist you in keeping your body healthy and hydrated.

1. Relieve headaches

Drink a cup of green tea if you have a headache. I have found that drinking green tea when I can feel a headache starting will often clear it almost straight away.

There’s so scientific proof to back me up on this but it really does work! Whether that’s due to all the antioxidants green tea contains, or that it is naturally full of the amino acid Theanine, a powerful relaxant or just that it is hydrating and good for you.

2. Ease hangover symptoms

Not that I actually drink alcohol anymore, but back when I did (on a regular basis) I often drank extra green tea throughout the day to help ease feelings of nausea, (again) headaches, to help re-hydrate, and it will also help your body to clear all the alcohol toxins from your system.

At the same time green tea will give you a steady boost of energy to get you through the day when you aren’t feeling your best.

3. Aid digestion & symptoms of IBS

Green tea is an anti inflammatory therefore it works to reduce inflammation in the gut. Because of this it can help relieve symptoms associated with indigestion, and some of the pain and discomfort that comes with IBS. It is also a relaxant, meaning that instead of tensing up when you are in pain, the green tea will help your muscles to relax instead. Reducing your discomfort.

4. Helps keep you hydrated and reduces water retention

It is often believed that tea is dehydrating, but although caffeine itself is dehydrating the quantities in which it is drunk in tea form, and the ratio of caffeine to the quantity of water, means that by drinking green tea you are actually hydrating your body. Drinking water, plus lots of antioxidants and plant nutrition.

By ensuring that you keep your water uptake high throughout the day you also prevent your body from going into ‘famine’ mode and holding onto water. By drinking lots of green tea you can also reduce water retention.

Green tea is a natural diuretic, and therefore aids in reducing fluid retention as well as overall inflammation.

5. Improve brain function

Green tea is a natural stimulant. It is full of caffeine as well as the amino acid L-theanine. As we all know caffeine can improve performance and brain function. Green tea doesn’t contain as much caffeine as coffee so you get the benefits without all the jittery side-effects!

L-theanine is often used to improve brain capacity and function, it is very good at reducing anxiety, it increases the dopamine and production of alpha waves in your brain, meaning that it can make you more energetic and productive.

6. Prevent infection & illness

Some of the catechins and bioactive compounds found n green tea are not only anti-inflammatory, but also antiviral and antibacterial. Drinking green tea regularly will therefore kill any harmful bacteria in your mouth (which can also prevent plaque and tooth decay), as well as harmful germs and bacteria in your bloodstream and throughout the rest of your body.

Drinking green tea will not only help the health of your mouth and your dental hygiene, but it can also help prevent you catching colds, flus, and other germs. It will also help you fight off illness when you do become sick.

8. Improve physical performance

Similar to caffeine, green tea has been show to improve physical performance, increase exercise endurance, and decrease reaction times. Green tea has the ability to mobilise fatty acids stored in fat tissue which allows your body to access them more easily and use them to produce energy. Which in turn aids your body in performing better and with more energy that usual.

The antioxidants in green tea can also help prevent tissue damage from exercise and physical exertion too.

Because of Green teas many, many health benefits there have been studies that show it helps you live longer. What it really does is help your body fight off lots of different health issues that can become life threatening, such as heart disease, obesity, many forms of cancer, a stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Therefore increasing your chances of a longer and healthier life.
