You may have already heard of chakras if you practice yoga or are interested in holistic and spiritual practices. On the whole, when people think about chakras they are the 7 chakras: your root chakra, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye and crown chakra.
But did you know there are 10 chakras you can work with to heighten your practice, and really help align and balance your body?
If you haven’t heard of the chakras but you’d like to know more, you can check out this article here, by mindvalley.
The 10 Chakras
So if you were surprised to learn there are in fact 10 chakras you can work with, I’m sure you are curious to know what the extra three are, right?
As well as the chakras I spoke about above, you also have your earth chakra at the base of your feet(earthy conker black/brown), your higher heart chakra (pink) located above your heart chakra, and your star or spirit chakra about three feet above your head (white/silver).
You can see the location of the 10 chakras shown in the diagram below so you have a good visual:

Working with the chakras
You can work with your chakras as part of you self-care practice, meditation practice, spiritually, or to help clear blockages & physical problems.
In this instance you can use the scents of particular essential oils to help you cleanse, balance & tune each individual chakra in turn..
The essential oils for each chakra I have detailed below. When using the essential oils you can either massage the oil into the area around the chakra (or where you are experiencing physical problems linked to that chakra). You can also diffuse the oils whilst meditating and working on balancing your chakras.
The earth chakra grounds and anchors your physical body to the earth, her frequencies and her energy. It also secures your aura in the physical world.
It is the chakra that strengthens your connection to the earth, nature, and our sense of inter-connectivity with all life. Through the earth chakra we receive energies from the earth that are rejuvenating, energetically nourishing, and loving.
If you are feeling ungrounded and lightheaded, mentally unable to focus or agitated, lonely & cut off from the world, energetically unbalanced, or in need of an energetic boost then you should start by working with the Earth chakra.
Although there aren’t specific oils for this chakra ( as it’s not located within your bodies aura), a simple visualisation exercise can help you access and work with the earth star and feel the benefit of being fully connected to the earth.
Earth Chakra Visualisation
Close your eyes and visualise the earth chakra about 6 inches below your feet. Imagine earths energy in a deep conker colour flowing into your earth chakra, to your feet and up into your root chakra. You should be able to feel the nourishing, loving, and grounding energy as it starts flowing and you visualise pulling that energy up through each of your chakras and up through your star chakra.
The root chakra, deep red, element earth.
Is located at your tail bone. As you might guess from its name it what connects you to the earth (like the roots of the tree), grounds you both physically and emotionally.
If your root chakra is blocked, open too much or not open enough it can manifest in both physical and emotional symptoms such as:
Fear, eating disorders, heavy/ungrounded feelings, worries about money, food, shelter & other basic needs.
Obesity, sciatica issues, lower body pain, arthritis, constipation, immune system problems, male reproductive system disorders.
To rebalance your root chakra you can use essential oils – Myrrh, Patchouli, Vertiver, Rosewood, Thyme, Frankincense, Ylang ylang.
You can also use /take Dandelion root, Ginger, and Sage.
The sacral chakra, golden orange, element water.
Is located a few inches below your navel. Is is the chakra associated with sensations & expressing your emotions, passion, pleasure, joy. Your self-respect and is linked to the female reproductive system.
The sacral chakra is also the chakra linked to Creativity, playfulness, and the things that give us pleasure in life: food, music, nature, intimacy. So is definitely one to focus on when you are feeling a creative block or stunted with creative thoughts and processes.
When you’re sacral chakra is blocked, open too much or not open enough it can cause us to be:
Emotional, addictive, feel guilt, or have intimacy issues.
Irritable bowel symptoms (IBS), painful periods, and ovarian cysts.
To rebalance your sacral chakra work with essential oils of Jasmin, Rose, Sandlewood, Ginger, Clary Sage, Fennel, and Cardamom. You can use these oils in a diffuser during meditation or to have around your home, as well as massaging them into the skin around your sacral chakra.

The higher heart chakra is also linked to your bodies immune system as it sits near the thymus gland (and can sometimes be referred to as the thymus chakra).
Although not the most well known or used chakra, it is definitely one of the most important. The higher heart chakra is the link between your hear and throat chakras, and more specifically the energy of your upper and lower body.
When you activate your higher heart chakra it takes the hearts energy, draws down the clarity from your throat chakra and results in a deep sense of knowing that gives you the sense that you have a purpose in the world and the ability to make an impact.
It raises our vibration. Allowing us to function at our highest capacity.
If the higher heart chakra is blocked, unactivated, or unbalanced it can result in you feeling “off” physically but with no clear symptoms.
As well as disconnected on a deeper level spiritually, emotionally and mentally.
To balance and activate the higher hear chakra use essential oils of Rose, or add rose water to your bath.
Use herbs such asMaca Root, and Shilajit & Reishi mushrooms, and visualise the higher heart area lit up and a light glow flowing through the higher heart chakra.
Walking barefoot in the grass and connecting with nature is also good. It’s one of the best chakra openers and chakra balancing activities there is.
The throat chakra, colour blue, element air.
Is, not surprisingly, at your throat. The lower neck just above your collarbone to be specific. It is the chakra associated with communication, speaking your truth, self expression, and your ability to determine truth & lie.

That’s your throat chakra at work. It’s telling you that person isn’t speaking their truth. You literally cannot swallow the things they say to you!
The throat chakra is also where we communicate our creativity, our wants, and is your self protection.
If the throat chakra is out of balance it can manifest physically in throat, thyroid, and tonsil issues.
Emotionally you can feel victimised, and it may cause dishonesty, an inability to listen, a fear of speaking, or being overly talkative.

If your third eye chakra is out of balance or blocked in any way it can lead to headaches, eyesight problems, hormonal imbalances, and migraines.
Emotionally it can cause lack of concentration, nightmares, depression, and denial.

As well as the chakra that lets you transcend your limitations, connect to universal consciousness, and your sense of direction.
It is your psychic centre, your connection to divine, and the chakra for your spiritual and mental wellbeing.
If your crown chakra is out of balance, blocked or unaligned it can result in headaches, depression, learning disorders or overly intense intellectualism, alienation, and spiritual cynicism.
Physically it can cause a sensitivity to light.
Essential oils for working on balancing your crown chakra and helping clear any blocks are Frankincense, Rosewood, Jasmine, Rose, Neroli.
For teas and other cooking use Lavender, Lotus root, Sandalwood, and Frankincense.
The star chakra, colour white, element spirit.
Is located about 6 inches above your head. Reach your hands above your head and imagine the star chakra will sit between your hands. It is the chakra associated with spiritual connection and enlightenment. It is the seat of your soul.
As well as the chakra that gives us a deep feeling of connection to the collective planet and the Universe.
It is the place where we receive divine love and spiritual energy. It is also the chakra where we connect with our higher self, and where all your karmic energy is stored.
Karmic energies themselves can lead to blockages that stop you from manifesting your life purpose and desires in this lifetime.
If the soul star chakra is blocked it can cause loss of balance, vertigo, eating disorders, and circulation problems. As well as physical problems in the lower body – legs, hips, feet, pelvic region, knees and ankles.
For balancing the Soul star chakra use essential oils of Jasmine, Rose, Neroli, Lavender, Peppermint, Copaiba, and Frankincense.
